Changing height, material or location during a repair may require review. Gadsden’s general sight-obstruction limit in a required front yard is 3 feet. Town and Country limits front-setback fencing to 42 inches and other fencing to 6 feet. An old fence is not proof that an altered replacement is permitted under the current rules.
If repairing chain link in Town and Country, confirm the restriction on visibility from a public right-of-way. In a design district, ask whether the repair or replacement requires a Certificate of Appropriateness. Call the Gadsden Building Department at (256) 549-4764 with the existing and proposed work. Check separate HOA requirements and boundary questions before changing a shared fence.
Red clay can hold water near wood posts, and rocky ground can complicate removing old foundations. Alabama humidity may reveal broader rot than the first broken board suggests. Inspect drainage, wood choice and soil contact before deciding how much to retain. Ask how the proposed repair addresses the cause of failure and supports the remaining structure.
Use Alabama 811 before new excavation and identify private utilities separately. Keep children and animals away from unstable sections, exposed wire and loose gate leaves. After storm damage, address safe access without approaching downed electrical lines. If an insurance claim is involved, document the condition and check the insurer’s process before disposal or replacement.
